Dennis Freshwater is a consultant transplant hepatologist at the Liver & Hepatobiliary Unit, Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.  He undertook his basic medical training at University College London.  He subsequently started his specialist gastroenterology training in the West Midlands and started in the Liver Unit in 2001, subsequently undertaking a research fellowship under the aegis of Dr David Mutimer and Dr Patricia Cane at the University of Birmingham. He was appointed as Consultant Transplant Hepatologist in Birmingham in 2007 and was also awarded an MD (Doctor of Medicine) in 2007 for his thesis on the evolution of hepatitis B and C in liver transplant recipients undergoing antiviral therapy.

Dennis Freshwater is the lead for Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio-Pancreatography (ERCP) at Queen Elizabeth Hospital and is the Principal Investigator for several clinical trials.  He has published extensively on general hepatology and viral hepatitis, including book chapters.  He is a member of the editorial board of Digestive & Liver Disease, and also regularly referees articles for Hepatology, Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics, Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and Transplantation. He is a member of the regional Gastroenterology Training Committee.
